YOC Programs

YOC is on a mission to get more talented singers involved in vocal training, enabling them to reach their potential, connecting them with other like-minded teens and giving back to their community. Scholarships for YOC programs are raised though benefit concerts and are donated by generous members of Vermont’s musical family. We are honored to be supported by organizations such as Burlington City Arts and the Vermont Arts Council to accomplish our common goals.

Opera Scenes Workshops

In these after-school programs, singers explore opera and operetta, comedy and tragedy, English or foreign language diction, and vocal and musical training in weekly rehearsals with other talented teens from a variety of high schools. Final performances are offered for the general public and directly in the participants’ schools.

Project Serenade

During summer months, YOC singers bring music and joy to friends, family and neighbors through concerts at senior residences and youth community centers in Burlington, South Burlington, Shelburne, Essex, Williston and Montpelier. Project Serenade is a proud recipient of Burlington City Arts Community Fund Grants.

Audition Masterclasses

YOC faculty Sarah Cullins, Kevin Ginter and Mary Jane Austin, joined by special guests from the industry, lead masterclasses in the art of auditioning. Open to all singers preparing auditions for opportunities such as music festivals, scholarships or college.

The Dido and Aeneas Project

Working alongside school choral teachers as an Artist-in-Residence, YOC founder Sarah Cullins guides and coaches student-led productions of Purcell’s iconic opera. The setting, costumes, staging and publicity are all student driven, resulting in a totally unique production in every residency. This project is made possible through the support of the Vermont Artis Council Artists in Schools program.

Inaugural program: Burlington High School Jan ’23

Current program: Colchester High School Jan ’24

Rehearsing and performing with other teens that I would not otherwise have met if it weren’t for YOC was one of the happiest and most fulfilling experiences of my entire high school career.

Ramsey Stephenson, YOC alumna

Project Serenade was a special and unique opportunity for me that answered the question of why we sing. The power of bringing someone joy, memory or connection through song is tremendously touching to evoke.
